  1. Understand the history of migration into American from South Asia.
  2. Use technology and primary sources to find this information.
  3. Analyze citizenship regarding South Asians in America.

First the instructor should present the resource www.saada.org and demonstrate its purpose and organization. Once the students understand the organization of this site, split the students up into groups and have them create a timeline of South Asian migration to the United States. Near the end of class regroup and have the groups discuss their findings. Using the students’ research questions push their thinking on the limits and possibilities of the archive, what these sources tell us about the South Asian American Diaspora, what surprises they uncovered, etc.

If time permits, also discuss the legal case United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind.  Explain the background and history of the case and push the students to analyze the results of the case. What does this represent? What does it mean for South Asian citizenship and identity.
