Chinese Immigration

This lesson series will analyze and link Chinese immigration policies in the US in the 1800s and the attitudes that produced such discriminatory policies as origins to modern perceptions of Asians as the “perpetual foreigners”.

Objectives include:

  1. Establish a baseline history of Chinese immigration and the steps taken by Congress to limit the Chinese in the 1800s.
  2. Break down the Wong Kim Ark court case, a land mark Supreme Court case, in which the Supreme Court made a judicial decision on what it meant to be a natural born citizen of the United States.
  3. Examine immigration struggles in the 1800s to show that Chinese and Chinese Americans were the first to take steps against prejudicial ordinances.
  4. Examine how Asians are given the “perpetual foreigner” label but are left out of conversations on immigration.

Each post will tackle an objective and invite you to reflect on the information presented within them.
